Why do Hispanics love to ignore the existence of non-Spanish speaking latinas? The constant erasure of afro-Latinos latinas wives and those of us who don’t come from Spanish speaking countries in these articles is horrendous.
Latina women represented 49 percent of all Latinos who matriculated into medical school in 2004. From 1980 to 2004, the number of Latina medical school graduates per year jumped from 93 to 485. Only 3 percent of Latina women are represented in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, or STEM, fields, while women in total make up 24 percent of the STEM workforce. Latinas hold only 7.4 percent of the degrees earned by women, though they constituted 16 percent of the female population in 2012. College graduation rates for Latinas have increased faster than any other group of women.
The Ugly Side of Latin Women
In Florida, Maria Jose Fletcher is the founder and co-director of VIDA Legal Assistance, a not-for-profit legal organization whose purpose is to provide legal support for the immigrant women who have been victims of violent crimes. This organization acknowledges and aims to solve the issue of fear of deportation that plagues the Latina community and makes it fearful of reporting such crimes. Currently, there are limited resources for Latina immigrants in the United States.
The Latinx community is one that has been attracting attention in recent years as more Americans become aware of the rich influence the community has had on our country. This hasn’t stopped so many amazing women from breaking the glass ceiling and paving the way for all the passionate young Latinas coming in behind them. But while Latina teens have amuch higher rateof teenage pregnancies than their white peers, they don’t have sex more often than their white counterparts. In fact, a2009 studylooking at sexual health factors in teens by race and ethnicity shows that the female rate of teenage intercourse for Latinas and non-Latina whites are identical, with 45% of teen girls from both racial/ethnic groups reporting having had sex. But there’s a more insidious side to this kind of stereotyping — besides being inaccurate, these types of depictions have been used to blame high rates of teen pregnancies in the community on the “spicy Latina.” As women, racial and ethnic minorities and members of a low socioeconomic status group, Latinas posses a triple minority status, all of which impact their educational opportunities. In the last 20 years, thenumber of womenincarcerated increased at a rate almost double that of men, with Latina women being 69% more likely to be incarcerated than white women. If you were to accept everything you heard about Latinas, you might think they were scheming and hypersexual, yet socially conservative women whose “equal educational opportunities” and “competitive purchasing power” signify their “arrival.”

Even if an ethnic minority is white-passing, when their nationality is revealed it may heighten their sexual appeal to people that value exoticism. The television and movie industry in America is dominated by white men who often portray ethnic minorities from a white point of view. Specifically, Latin American women in the American mainstream media are exoticised and hypersexualized. But my father’s family is from the Amazon and my mother’s is from the Andes, and these two cultures deeply shaped my experience — from the music I love to the food I eat. I grew up in Black and brown neighborhoods in Miami, so that experience — going to Fritangas, eating pastelitos with my Cuban stepfather at the time, playing Dominos, and dancing to Bachata, Reggaeton, and Southern hip hop — is so much a part of my culture. I identify as white passing to acknowledge my privilege, and I have been praised for my proximity to whiteness.
In fact one study found that 21% of pregnant Latinas experienced both reproductive coercion and IPV increasing their risk for an unplanned pregnancy. Immigrant women who are married were more likely to experience IPV than unmarried immigrant women. These differences are consistent with other studies examining physical and mental health outcomes, school achievement, and substance abuse.

Consistent with the literature reporting fetal sex differences in vulnerability to the maternal stress response,40 we found a greater response among male births. We also found evidence that the number of male and female preterm births over and above expected values peaked in February and July 2017. As noted above, these peaks would suggest critical periods near conception and during the second trimester, assuming the election marked the onset of stress. The inauguration and subsequent passage of immigration-related Executive Orders in January 2017, for example, may have stressed Latina women as much as or more than the election. If so, the critical periods suggested by the February and July peaks would correspond to the late third trimester and middle first trimester, respectively.
By 12, I was straightening and relaxing my hair, all to feel pretty or to one day be called sexy. I first started running this program out of my own living room, in order to bring Latina women together to build peer support and increase opportunities for Latina women in our community. This program grew into a one-year leadership development and community service program and today I am so proud to say that over 820 women have graduated from MSL as Peer Leaders! MSL is a life changing experience that has had a profound impact on the lives of so many women who have successfully rebuilt their self-esteem, recovered their pride in their identities as Latina women and re-established their dreams. For 20 years, The Latina Center has been dedicated to improving the Physical, Mental and Spiritual health of Latina women and their families in the Bay Area, specifically in West Contra Costa County.
Patterns of female family structure are found to be similar in Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic, and tend to be more matrifocal. Conversely, Mexican and Costa Rican women are often migrating from a patriarchal husband-wife system, with just 13% and 22% of households headed by women in these countries, respectively. Puerto Rico lies somewhere between these two systems, sharing aspects of both patriarchal and matrifocal systems. According to a study published by the National Institute of Health, these patterns correspond with relatively low female participation in the labor force. Because the Latina ethnicity encompasses a large variety of people, including people of various races from various countries, it is difficult to define the Latina Family experience in a simple way. To do so would oversimplify this population and result to stereotyping, as the experience of Latinas is just as nuanced as the women who comprise this ethnic group.
